Trekking in the Indian Himalayas is an unparalleled adventure. Still, almost all regions require permits to ensure the trekkers’ safety and the environment’s protection. Various parts of India require trekking expedition permits from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). Let us prepare you for your next trekking adventure by guiding you through obtaining a permit from the IMF. A national body that promotes mountaineering and related sports in India is the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. As the regulatory and oversight body for mountaineering throughout the country, it oversees trekking, climbing, and expeditions. The highest peaks of the Himalayas are indeed found in Nepal. Still, many of the Himalayan Mountains are located in India. It is estimated that there are hundreds of semi-technical, technical, and very technical peaks in Northern India. With many challenging peaks in Kashmir, Leh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, a well-prepared mountaineer is spoiled for choice.
Eligibility Criteria
- Who Needs a Permit? – Expeditions entering restricted areas, especially those near international boundaries, usually need permits. Permits may not always be required for open places, but checking with the IMF is always advisable.
- Team Composition – Both individual and group trekkers may apply. Ensure everyone in the party applying has the required experience and fitness level for the selected journey. Along with some expedition experience, half the crew, including the leader, should have completed an “Advanced Mountaineering Course” certification from an accredited mountaineering organization. A team may consist of no more than two non-mountaineering certified members; these individuals must have prior high-altitude trekking and rock-climbing expertise. A certified ‘Basic Mountaineering Course’ participant from an accredited mountaineering institute may make up the remaining team members.
- Team Leaders – A certified ‘Advanced Mountaineering Course’ instructor from an accredited mountaineering institute is required for the expedition team leader, who must be at least 25 years old. They should have taken part in and accomplished the summit of at least two trips to peaks higher than 6,400 meters.
