Myths and Legends of Uttarakhand: The Chopta Chandrashila trek

Myths and Legends of Uttarakhand: The Chopta Chandrashila trek. India is a country blessed with countless deities, myths, and legends drawn from epic tales like the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Every corner of India holds a unique story, and the Chopta Chandrashila Trek is no exception.

Besides a breath-taking adventure, the Chopta Chandrashila trek traverses history, mythology, and spirituality. Located in Uttarakhand, this trek is widely known for its beautiful vistas and topographical diversity as well deep-rooted connections to Hindu mythology.

The Chandrashila Peak, located at about 13,000 feet, offers a wide-ranging view of some of the grandest peaks of the Himalayas, such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.

The Chopta Chandrashila Trek goes beyond the magnificent landscape. The journey to Chandrashila Peak is not only a test of physical endurance, but also a spiritual journey through the epic stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Tungnath – The Highest Shiva Temple and Its Winter Abode

Situated at an altitude of 12,073 feet, the Chopta Tungnath temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the sacred Panch Kedar shrines. Legend has it that the Pandavas, after winning the battle of Kurukshetra, came to seek Lord Shiva’s pardon for the atrocities of war.

Refusing to grant them an audience, Shiva took the form of a bull and disappeared to Gupthkashi. On learning about his whereabouts, Bhima, the mightiest of the Pandavas, instantly set out in the pursuit of Shiva disguised as the bull. In order to evade detection, Shiva’s body disintegrated and reappeared in five different places, which eventually became the Panch Kedar temples. Tungnath is one of the holiest Shiva shrines, believed to be the site of appearance of the arms of Lord Shiva.

The temple remains close during the harsh winters so where can someone get the blessings of Lord Tungnath in winter? The idol of Lord Tungnath is shifted to Makkumath, a small hamlet located around 19 km away from Chopta. The doli of Tungnath is carried out with full devotion, allowing the devotees to carry on offering prayers in spite of the main temple being inaccessible.

Chandrashila: The Moon Rock and the Meditation of Lord Rama

Resting at an elevation of 13,000 feet, Chandrashila Peak is the highest point of the Chopta Chandrashila trek and offers a truly mesmerizing view of the Himalayas. Yet beyond its scenic beauty, the summit is very much revered from mythological aspects.

As per popular legend, after defeating the mighty Ravana, Lord Rama meditated at Chandrashila in search of divine blessings and to atone for the sins of war. Penance was performed by Him at this place to cleanse Himself of His sins of battle.

Another legend attributes the naming of the peak to the belief that Chandra, the Moon God, also meditated here. Trekkers often speak of indescribable calm that descends on Chandrashila Peak upon their arrival, as though the energies of the ancient meditation sessions are still lingering in the atmosphere. Whether one seeks adventure or spirituality, standing at the summit feels like stepping into the interstice of a magical world, nature, and divinity.

The Spiritual Connection of Nature

Even someone like me, who isn’t very religious, could feel something special on this trek. There is some energy in the air, perhaps from the legends spoken of, or just because of the incredible beauty of the place- walking up through dense forests of Chopta past the rhododendrons, boldly merged into oak trees. It felt spiritual. The rivers we crossed- Alaknanda and devprayag sangam-are not just water bodies; they are holy conjunctions where myth and nature intertwine.

One of my companions for the hike who resounds strongly in meditation was also celebrating her birthday, and she wanted to see some snow on the hike. We all laughed it off; there was no indication in the forecast for that. But as we reached just 50 meters from the Tungnath temple, the first snowflakes began to fall. Climbing Chandrashila Peak in the snowfall has been surreal, as if that itself was answer from nature: at that moment, faith-in gods, the universe, or simply the magic of the mountains-felt rather real indeed.
